If It\’s Too Good To Be True…..Well…

May 12th, 2009 by Kevin

You just know there are ton of people that have been waiting for this

Our friends at The Patriot Depot just received a call from Rosemarie in Ball, Louisiana alerting Patriot Depot that her brother-in-law was stopped by small town Louisiana police and detained by the roadside for half an hour. A background check was conducted to determine whether he was a member of an \”extremist\” group. Why? Her brother-in-law (name not disclosed for privacy) had purchased and displayed a conservative \”Don\’t Tread on Me\” bumper sticker on his car.

I just know this is going to be the next viral story amongst the Right Wing Blogosphere.  But for those that would listen to counsel before diving head first into emotional driven paranoia, I urge caution.  Even if you take everything here at face value, it\’s still a story that starts out as a \”friend of a friend\’s sister\’s husband blah blah blah\”.  Which is pretty much the same dubious position every email scam you\’ve ever read starts from.

I know everyone wants to believe it, because it fits the exact stereotype of what people feared from that stupid DHS report.  However, because it fits exactly, it\’s an extra good reason to be skeptical.  Again taking this at face value, there is plenty of opportunity to find supporting evidence.  If there is any grain of truth to it, it shouldn\’t be hard to find some collaborating evidence.

You\’d think an organization that\’s been around the block once or twice would recognize that but unfortunately WND has already gone full viral.  To their credit they at least recognized that they should be able to find evidence of that.  To their discredit, even when those opportunities suggested it wasn\’t true, they decided to just parrot the American Vision guys and left it like that.

\”Who cares if it\’s true! It makes the left look bad!\” is a horrible intellectual starting position when making a point.  In fact, it is the exactly same rhetorical \”logic\” that the forged Killian Bush National Guard documents started out with.  \”Who cares if it\’s true, they make Bush look bad!\” was the satirical line of the season.  And it\’s ideological cousin is being employed here now.  This time it ends up with the Right looking like Dan Rather.

Thanks a lot guys.

Why discard the one advantage the Right has in this battle, the Truth, especially when “stupid things done by the Left” is such a target-rich environment?

  2. Harvey Says:

WND has a habit of running with rumors. You’re right to be extra skeptical on anything they post.
