Ceasefire Declared

August 27th, 2007 by Kevin

Well this Sunday was the second annual Blog Wars, destined to go down in history as Blog Wars II : Attack of the Cockleburr.  And I must say it was a great success.  Much fun was had, and we raised a very nice sum of money for Soldier\’s Angels, alot more than last year!  In fact we raised more then was raised at the MilF golf tournament on Friday, and there were more people involved in that! It\’s wonderful to see that fun can be had and we still accomplish something in the process.

On the paintball front it was rather interesting.  While it was held at the same place we played on different fields which were ALOT different than last year.  Much bigger, denser foliage.  Firefights tended to be isolated and short.  In many cases, players came across each other by accident, and to very mutual surprise.

Most had not played very much, for some it was their first time.  Yet others were veterans at this game, and I dare say the veterans got the worse end of the deal as largely they were some of the first ones out.  Some of that might be due to more aggressive play, but it\’s also likely that those paintball rookies also learned very quickly.  Heck, even AAA forced me to surrender on one of the last games of the day, although I managed to paste him multiple times in previous games.

I was a little concerned how the Nightwriter would weather the day, being a temporal veteran but a paintball rookie. When he was hit literally 10 seconds into the first game I feared this might become a long day for him.  However, by the end of the day he was holding his own.  Even managed to almost singlehandly hold my left flank, while another rookie (Garrett) held the right flank.  This allowed me the freedom to advance and get ahold of the flag.  Then while Nightwriter, with help from others kept our opponents busy, Garret was able to escort me to the opponents base.  This turned out to be necessary as I needed him to keep another straggler busy while I sprinted for the opponents base for the big win.  By far, I had the easy job, that game the win was definitely delivered by what used to be rookies.

We did try to play the game of President again, and for the first time the President lived, and the terrorists were positively steamrolled.  In fact, that\’s how AAA was able to force me to surrender.  Out of nowhere they appeared in front of a small bunker I was using.  And while looking around one side of the bunker I neglected to notice AAA sprinting up the other side.  Fortunately I turned just in time to see him about five feet away with his gun up.  Considering as a Secret Service agent he can\’t die, it didn\’t seem intelligent to try to shoot him.  More the pity really. Quite a crack team of Secret Service agents, although I did manage to \”kill\” a Secret Service agent in my brief firefight with them.  Without going into details, let me just say that in the future, nut-cups will be required equipment.

All in all, lots of fun, and we\’ll definitely be returning for a third annual Blog Wars, tentatively titled Blog Wars III : Revenge Of The Balls.

Blog Wars II : Hostilities Imminent

August 20th, 2007 by Kevin

\"BlueNegotiations have broken down, hostilities are imminent. Blogs Wars II is less than a week away, and all forces are at DEFCON 2. I\’ve got a list of interested parties, many of which will be returning parties but also a few new entries. And it\’s not too late for new participants to register and declare war on their fellow bloggers, blog readers, or just barely innocent civilians. In fact there are already a few rather interesting pair-ups in participants which should bring some rather interesting on-field dynamics to the already hectic action.

If you\’re interested, here are some of the details:

Sunday, August 26th at 1:30 pm, at the Adventure Zone fields in Rosemount, will be the 2007 Blogosphere Battle Royale, also known as Blog Wars II : Attack of the Cockleburr. Address is

13410 Court House Blvd
Rosemount, MN

Cost varies but I would say you can count on spending $50 at least….it all depends on how much paint you want to buy and how generous you want to be to charity.

Also…. \"Purple

I\’ve had a few questions on equipment, Adventure Zone rents the Tippman Custom 98s, which is a decent baseline gun. They are famous for being rugged and reliable. The old saying is you can run it over with a truck, pick it up and it\’ll shoot. Hence the reason fields love \’em. Individuals tend to like them because they are very customizable.

Some have questioned if they should be buying their own guns, which if you plan on playing alot is always a good question. I will never discourage that, but the best gun will not make you a good player. However, if you do want to invest money in something, I would suggest your first option should be a mask. It\’s always nice to be able to put on a mask that fits me and I have adjusted to fit me without the little pinches that can irritate on the field.

But Adventure Zone has done a decent job of keeping up their equipment which is why I\’m staying with them this year. And if you don\’t want to invest lots of money in paintball equipment, you can get along just fine without.

So here are the details:

Blog Wars II : Rescheduled

July 26th, 2007 by Kevin

Ok the field finally got back to me and so the details are now set, here they are

Who : You, all bloggers, all blog readers, anyone that has heard the word \”blog\”, anyone that knows how to spell (plus AAA).

What : Paintball for charity…we get to shoot each other, and despite our bruises we feel good about it cause we\’re raising money for a good cause!!

When : Sunday, August 26th (the weekend after the MILF)  Game starts at 2 pm, be there by 1:30 pm.  Game ends when Learned Foot starts crying

Where : The Adventure Zone in Rosemount, same place as last year but I\’ve reserved a different field.  Map

Why : Because it\’s fun and you\’d love to raise money for Soldier\’s Angels, the MOBs favorite charity.

How : Well first of all contact me and let me know you\’re coming, then show up!!  Bring money.

Cost : $35 for the package deal, plus your donation to charity.

That gets you everything you need plus 250 rds of paint.  You\’ll use more paint than that though, so I would highly recommend teaming up with one or two other people and buying a box (2000 rds).  Or if you do alot of killing like me, just buy a box for yourself.  If you really want to save money buy the box in advance at their Pro Shop in Burnsville, location is at the website.

Any other questions, by all means contact me and/or leave a comment on this post.

NOTE : I\’m not bothering extending a specific invitation to the lefties this year (although they are welcome to come).  But as we learned they are pansies and afraid of anything not involving tofu, so not worth my time.

BlogWars Postponed

June 2nd, 2007 by Kevin

I\’ve decided to postpone BlogWars since it has become obvious that most of the people that had planned on attending were unable to attend now…mostly due to graduation parties/ceremonies/etc.

I will announce the new date when I figure out what that is.

Blog Wars II : Attack of the Cockleburr Reminder

April 29th, 2007 by Kevin

On Sunday, June 3rd, the blogosphere battle royal Blog Wars II will be taking place at 1 pm. I think everyone from last year is returning to play. Plus we\’ve gotten a few additional people signing on, but we still have plenty of room for more targets participants. Feel free to invite friends if you want. We\’ll have to see if we can\’t get one of those pansies from NARN to show up too.

From talking to people I\’ll answer some frequently asked questions

Where\’s it being held??

It\’s being held at the same field as last year. You can find a map on their website.

How much does it cost??

Well, they have several package deals. If you want a Tippman 98 gun, which is a standard gun but still very very capable, it\’ll cost you $35. If you want to upgrade to an A-5 gun, it\’s $45. This will get you few hundred rounds of paint (which won\’t be enough). So plan some additional money for more paint. I know several people last year went into together on a case, which are $50 apiece.

Also we\’ll be playing for charity so count your contribution in there.

What should I bring???

Well if you use your own equipment bring that for sure, otherwise the field will provide you the equipment you absolutely need to play. However, I would suggest comfortable shoes/boots as you will do alot of running on uneven ground. I\’d also suggest clothing that covers your entire body as you\’ll also do alot of crawling and jumping behind trees. I\’d suggest some loose fighting clothing as it helps take the sting from the paint. You don\’t need camo, although you are welcome to wear it, but most people last year did not.

Does it hurt?

Yes and no. Yes it hurts in some cases, however, it doesn\’t hurt near as much as you probably think. The first one is the worst and once you\’ve gotten over that mental hurtle you\’re free. Besides, most people have so much adrenaline going through their system they barely feel it. Well….until the next morning when you count up your bruises.

Can I shoot you?

Sure…most people look forward to that

I\’ve never played…

Most of the people from last year had not either. But that didn\’t stop them.

Any other questions let me know…

Blog Wars II : Attack of the Cockleburr Update

April 9th, 2007 by Kevin

Ok I have a tentative date, time and location for this years Blog Wars. Information is as followed

Who : You….bloggers, blog readers, etc

What : Paintball!!

When : Sunday, June 3rd at approximately 1 pm

Where : Adventure Zone Paintball (same as last year) map can be found at the site.

Why : To have fun and raise a little money for a charity (to be announced)

How : Either send me an email, or leave a comment below, so I know we have enough people to hold it. I won\’t ask for money up front, but I\’d like to know who is interested.

Feel free to invite those who might be interested. Even if you haven\’t played before you\’ll have fun. I think most of the people that attended last year had not played before so that\’s not a valid excuse.

Note : I don\’t know that I\’ll even bother formally inviting the lefties this year. While they talk a big game, that\’s all they got. Which is alot like their politics. However, if you are a lefty, you\’re more than welcome to show up and prove you\’re not a tree-hugging pansy.

Blog Wars II : Attack of the Cockleburr Planning Begins

March 31st, 2007 by Kevin

It just occurred to me I haven\’t really even started on planning the Second Annual Blog Wars fundraiser event.  So for those that attended last year, or are interested in attending this year, here\’s your chance for input

  1. Date…any dates work especially best.  For planning purposes I think we need to look at least a month out. Preferences?
  2. Location…last year we used the field in Rosemount.  I\’m open to switching fields if it works better for people.  Preferences?
  3. Charity…last year we used Soldiers Angels, which is a worthy charity and I\’m not opposed to contributing to them again.  But I think I kind of had it in my head that it\’d be a rotating charity thing.  This year, I was sort of thinking of Neil Duncan…but I\’m open to suggestions.
  4. Do we even bother inviting the hippies liberals this year?  Last year I made an effort to round them up, but while they talked a big game when it came time to actually put it on the line they dropped faster than a hooker in Bangkok.

That is all.

Blog Wars II : Attack of the Cockleburr

December 19th, 2006 by Kevin

My first attempt at a MOB-wide paintball game resulted in Blog Wars I : The Phantom Ecker. Since then I have received alot of positive feedback and assurances that they are in again for next year. Probably the only negative feedback I've gotten is Andy's jealousy about my ammo pack and the extreme number of cockleburrs.

So I thought I'd all let you know that planning has already begun for Blog Wars II : Attack of the Cockleburr. This time it'll be in the spring. Definitely before it gets too warm and hopefully before the cockleburrs are in bloom. I figure that fall equals election season and is therefore just too damn busy for most people.

The real reason for this post though is to warn you all. You see after getting the MVP title I've been feeling a little pressure to defend my title next year. Since I've had my current equipment for a few years now I figure it's time to invest in some new technology. I put my staff on it, and this is what they came up with.

\"Paintball

That's right….a paintballing tank. A full recall of it's trial runs can be found here. So be warned everyone. The Ecker division of the MN Militia is already working on perfecting their Blitzkrieg tactics. I hope to have my own paintballing Luftwaffe off the ground (pun sorta intended) by Blog Wars III : Revenge of the Chickenhawks.

Ceasefire Declared In Blog Wars

September 17th, 2006 by Kevin

Well this last Saturday was the official Blog Wars, and we had 11 people show up, including Bell, Mall Diva, Learned Foot, Noodles, Uncle Ben and a number of various friends/readers/comment trolls/etc also showed up. Thanks to all for attening and make the events a success. We manage to have alot of fun and raised $130 for Soldiers Angels. Links to other roundups and photos are down at the bottom of this post.

The whole event was alot of fun and despite the punishing hits some people took I saw nothing but smiles all day long. Although time needed to get ready for the next round got longer as the day went on. But I had alot of good feedback and several people indicated this should become an annual event so it will. Maybe the left will even grow a backbone and join us eventually. Now I just need a really good name for the event. The name Blog Wars is nice….but it doesn\’t compare to Foots MILF golfing event. Ideas anyone??

It was nice that we had a wide mix of skill levels. Some had played alot, although I was the only one with my own gear. Others had never played before. The differences between those two categories diminished greatly over the course of the day. The ultimate example of that was that in the final round of \”President\” when the two most seasoned vets had already been eliminated and had to watch as former Paintball virgin Learned Foot snuck up on, ambushed and killed the opposing teams President.

Definitely the most interesting rounds were the \”President\” rounds. I had played a variation of it at other fields in the past, but this field put a new spin on it we tried. Basically you have two teams, the smaller team designates a \”President\”. The President is unarmed, and if he dies, that team loses. The rest of the team is the Secret Service and they cannot be killed regardless of how many times they got hit and they have to stay within 15 feet of the President. The other team is the \”Terrorists\” and they can die. Goal is to get the President from one side of the field to the other alive. It\’s surprisingly difficult.

It\’s a good thing none of us are real Secret Service agents because the President died both times. The first time the Secret Service started running out of ammo and had to make a suicide run, during which the President got shot in the back twice. The second time, while the Secret Service fought and killed the main delaying force, an elite (aka rookie) terrorist, Learned Foot, snuck around behind them and painfully waited for his oppurtunity to shoot the President in the back.

It was rather interesting because it really revealed some of the true limitations of both sides. When I played the Secret Service I initially used bunkers and trees to shield myself until it sunk that I couldn\’t die. So I stood up the whole time and was able to better see what was going on and direct the other \”agents\” who weren\’t so willing to take the alarming number of hits I had to endure. But the point was I had a good understanding of the field of battle and where the lines of fire were.

However, when I played terrorist, myself and a friend were the first line of defense in what was ultimately a delaying tactic until our other teammates could sneak around behind them. It became very clear how much that visibility on the battle field helped. Often times I was pinned down by Secret Service fire without knowing exactly where they were. Both me and my teammate in the first line, were relatively marginalized. Our best hope was to delay them long enough before dying to give Learned Foot the chance to get behind them.

Lesson learned….even in paintball, intelligence and communication is key.

Other round ups include
Uncle Ben (he has photos and even gives me the MVP award)
Noodles
Bell
Mall Diva
