Dozens Of Gunmen Seen Gathering….Nothing Happens

June 28th, 2009 by Kevin

Remember the old joke about how someone held a fight and hockey game broke out? I’m sure liberals and gun haters everywhere were pretty sure something akin to that was going to happen at Lake Harriet today, when over 70+ Second Amendment enthusiasts, most carrying a firearm of some variety gathered for their Fourth Occasional “Gun Rights” Gathering.  It was a chance to renew old friends and meet the faces that go with the names previously only known via email or message boards.

It was a chance to swap stories and gossip about upcoming news.  It was a chance to enjoy the fellowship of other Second Amendment enthusiasts.  It also meant over 50 firearms were in very close proximity, few of them concealed, for an extended period of time in a public setting.

According anti-Second Amendment loonies, like the Citizens For A Safer Minnesota, this should have been a recipe for disaster.  It was virtually guaranteed that the Wild West would break out.  Blood would run in the streets as guns started spontaneously going off by the very virtue of how dangerous they are.  Hell with the Transformers movie being recently released I’m sure all those firearms should have combined and transformed into a howitzer that would instantly level the entire Minneapolis downtown area.

Instead nothing happened….at least nothing that doesn’t happen every day.  Friendships were made and reinforced.  Laughs were shared.  Stories were told.  Fun was had by all.  And despite it being a very very busy day at Lake Harriet, the public around us were largely unmoved and unalarmed by the obvious presence of so many firearms.  From my observations the worst I say was a couple double takes and a few confused stares.  Otherwise people went about their day with no obvious alarm, despite this taking place in the liberal mecca of Minneapolis.

In short, in the hands of responsible law-abiding citizens a large conglomeration of guns failed to cause disaster or even incite panic.  I’m starting to think that perhaps guns themselves are not inherently evil and instead may simple be a simple tool???  Dare I think such thoughts.

Ah, but none of you had automatic weapons, did you? It’s inherently obvious in the naming of those awful things that automatic weapons go off AUTOMATICALLY when people are present, preferably old ladies and little children. Semi-automatic weapons, being cheaper, are less discriminating and just kill people at random and without warning. :->

  2. Kevin Says:

Well on that note automatic weapons are already highly illegal for most people

  3. J. Ewing Says:

    Now you know why! :-)

Were they wearing their cowboy hats? I stopped wearing guns when I turned ten. Freud would have a field day over that meeting. They would have achieved more for society if they picked up the trash while they were their.

  5. Kevin Says:

Nope, none of them consider themselves cowboys. Merely wanting to take responsibility for their own safety.

Freud has something against personal responsibility?

And whose to say they didn’t pick up some trash while there.??

  6. J. Ewing Says:

Or maybe pick OFF some trash?

I don’t remember the movie, but it’s where the bad guys bust into a meeting hall, intending to take hostages and hold off the cops, only to discover it’s an NRA meeting, bristling with firearms. I’m having a happy little mental image of some mugger breaking into your little soiree’ and being similarly dissuaded from his chosen career.

Concerned for their own safety at Lkae Harriet? Afraid they would get mugged by some old ladies? Just remember the Mpls. cops train thier officers , if they see a person packing heat, to take them down to the ground & while kneeling on their neck, to dis-arm them & ask to see their permit. Maybe they should party in Fridley.

  8. Kevin Says:

First of all I call bullshit on your MPLS cop training. Carrying a firearm with a permit is completely legal, and the cops were aware of our presence. No problems.

You really are new to the whole firearm thing aren’t you?

I generally don’t go anyplace I feel my life would be endangered, so by definition any place that something does happen would be a place it’s not expected. And really who would have thought the mall, Valleyfair, or your home would all be places you could be attacked? But all those place have recently had deadly attacks in Minnesota.

You keep dragging out your tired talking points, I’ll keep putting them out of their misery.

  9. tony Says:

As a former NRA member, life long hunter, current gun owner & former suburban police dept. member, I think I know a few things about guns. I have no problem with conceal/carry laws. Guns are a tool, just like a hammer, obviously for a different purpose, but I dont see hammer owners holding parties & showing off their hammer ownership, but hey, I dont polka either. As to your ability to handle my talking points, if I may quote your favorite president: “bring it on”. Oh, and by the way, I’m still waiting for the bill that you said Tara Mack was going to sponsor to bring all that Mpls school money back to Dakota County?

  10. Kevin Says:

Yeah, they are a simple tool. And they also have a rather unfortunate reputation. I don’t see politicians trying to restrict the use of hammers much. So hammer users aren’t under quite the stigma and threat that gun owners are.

These gatherings are to demonstrate that there is nothing wrong with people carrying. We’re just average people who happen to be carrying.

It’s also meant to reunite old friends and make new ones. A lot of us communicate often online, but due to us living all over the state, we don’t often get to see each other in person. These gatherings are a good excuse to do so.

As far as Tara goes, I’m not sure I ever made that claim. And besides which I’m not her spokesman. I can give you the information on how to contact her if you want??

  11. tony Says:

Yes, you made the claim that Rep. Madore was funding Mpls. schools over our schools & you infered that Mack would not. As you know, Mpls & St Paul get more because of federal funding, much of it for free lunches for poor kids. Mack is just there as a easy vote for the caucus. Madore brought home the taxes we had paid, Mack can not & will not. I noticed she was not at the ground breaking for the BRT in Apple Valley, Gerlach was. Madore got us that money & now we have the BRT, but we need a bit more & Mack’s party leaders want that money for their areas. We need someone who will help us, Mack has no intention or understanding of this, & she does not answer her e-mails.

  12. Kevin Says:

Both Mack and Gerlach were a bit part of the BRT effort. Gerlach has been a big supporter of that from the beginning.

Rep. Madore did support formulas which HEAVILY favored Minneapolis schools over suburban schools. As far as I can tell Rep. Mack has not done that.

And “bringing home the bacon” is not a good measure of a politician. I’d rather have them not spending my money at all, rather than bringing it back to the district.
