Stevens Convicted

Good riddance to a complete asshat.
Having a Democrat win that seat would be worth getting rid of his corruption and arrogance. If there is any disappointment it\’s in Alaskan Republicans for continuing to nominate this complete trainwreck for the past 40 years.
He\’ll probably get no actual jailtime but at least we can get rid of him….unless Alaska actually votes in a convicted felon as one of their US Senators.

I don’t understand the willingness of Republicans to throw their fellow Republicans under the bus. You certainly don’t see Democrats doing it, and that gives them a political advantage. Massive personal failings (apparently) do not mean he was a bad Republican in terms of policy, or voting record. I am certain that he was FAR better than any Democrat in that regard.
Were I Alaskan, I would vote for the guy and keep the seat in Republican hands, then appoint a Republican to replace him (the Governor, you may recall, is a Republican) if and when that conviction is upheld.

Fiscally he’s a horrible conservative and he’s corrupt as the day is long. I see no reason to defend someone like that regardless of what party they belong to.
I have standards I apply to both parties, not just the other one.

It’s fine to have standards and even better to live by them. But the idea that you would punish yourself politically just to live by those standards is one of those odd inclinations that makes us “the stupid party.” We’re right on the issues, we just have no clue as to how to play the political game.

Wrong.
We embrace asshats like Stevens and the GOP brand is weakened. We don’t have the media to cover for us, he’s gonna be talked about. So unless we actively and vocally distance ourselves from him, he hurts us far more than he helps.
The fact that he’s a corrupt and arrogant asshat makes that easier.

I’m not “embracing” anybody. I just want us to use our common sense and keep the guy around one more week before throwing him under the bus. I would think that the American principle of “innocent until proven guilty” ought to hold some sway here. I’m tired of the Democrats gleefully pinning some supposed transgression on a Republican, even if it’s a lie, and then getting US to string the guy up without a second glance. I do not like being a “hit squad” for the Dems and their political advantage. Notice how, once they get one Republican, they go after another the same way? OK, he’s an asshat, but he’s OUR asshat, dangit.
