Shoddy Journalism

July 16th, 2008 by Kevin

Saw an article today that clearly can’t be true.

A Minnetonka gun shop on Excelsior and Co. Rd. 4 was burglarized early Monday morning and dozens of weapons are now missing.

Burglars stole several different kinds of handguns, and police are now on edge.

Police say the burglars knew what they were doing and exactly what they wanted. They hit the Glen Lake Gun Shop around dawn, hours before employees arrived, and disarmed the store’s sophisticated security system.

The reason I know this to be false is because we have lots and lots of gun control laws. Those laws are clearly designed to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals. This clearly false news article means that criminals didn’t care what the law said and stole guns in violation of said laws. Which is just silly, because if that were true it would mean that gun control laws are silly and pointless, because they really only stand in the way of the law abiding citizen.

Now I think we all know our politicians in St. Paul are omniscient and therefore know what’s best for us. Since that is the case, this so called burglary clearly couldn’t happen. To claim otherwise would throw out the entire belief system that our DFL controlled legislature has constructed for us. I demand that the media correct the record 1984-style and remove all mention of this unevent.

As further record of this shoddy work of journalism is this statement

The total stock of what’s missing came to 30 handguns, including .22s, .38s, .45s and Glock’s.

Everyone sing it!

One of these things is not like the other…..

.22s, .38s, .45s and Glock’s??? That’s a bit like describing the career of a car thief by saying he stole trucks, sedans, SUVs and Honda’s. .22, .38 and .45 are calibers (size of the bullet for you firearm-illiterate) of handguns. Glock is a manufacturer of handguns, and one of the many calibers they manufacturer is for instance a .45 handgun.

Clearly ignorance of handguns is pervasive throughout this article. But most serious is their clear untruthiness in suggesting that gun control laws don’t really prevent criminals from getting guns. Now that’s just crazy. How could they even suggest such a thing. I’m calling Sarah Brady to set them straight!

I agree it’s shoddy reporting. It’s similar to the failure of reporting that, since those “no guns allowed” signs went up, not a single convenience store or liquor store has ever been robbed!
