Power To The People Or Harmless Group Therapy?

July 14th, 2008 by Kevin

It appears as if the Republican Party decided to follow the Democrats by allowing their supporters to decide the party platform. William Teach slammed the Democrats for the move and also slams the Republicans. Now he makes good points

1. people who have no intention of voting Republican are going to register and leave comments
2. Republicans are just not in to the whole Internet social sheepling like Democrats, as we are too independent minded
3. maybe the RNC should already friggin\’ know what the Republican voters want them to do by now.
4. how about some leadership, RNC?

Ok all very very valid points…especially number 3. But I have to disagree that it\’s a bad idea.

Heh, the platform is non-binding. Nobody really pays attention to it. McCain is gonna do whatever the hell he wants to do anyway, he\’s clearly never been inclined to listen to what his base has to say. Republicans in the Senate are obviously suffering from the same delusions. They appear to think that conservatives exist to support them, rather than their position exists to represent their supporters. House Republicans, by virtue of their near constant re-election pressure, are somewhat more susceptible to the whims of the conservative base, but even there there are plenty of examples of rogue RINOs.

So even if the conservative base dictates a platform that outlaws the country of Iran and requires Republicans to pass legislation requiring it\’s nuclear destruction, I\’ll bet my season tickets it doesn\’t happen.

And addressing Teach\’s concerns, for example number 1….trolls are gonna login leaving weird comments. As opposed to any other political website? Or the comment area of any newspaper? It\’s the internet, it\’s roads are paved by assholes. To number 2, so what? It turns into a giant flop, anyone gonna be shocked that the RNC did something that turned into a disaster?? Alert the media for that first! Now while I agree with number 3, I honestly think they do already know what conservatives want…they just don\’t give a crap, ivory tower syndrome has taken over. And number 4 was a joke right?? You realize who you are addressing right??

And mostly importantly, I think the whole concept is a good idea. Consider it group therapy for online conservatives. They get to join together and collecting bitch and vent and feel good having done it, thinking they make a difference. It\’s the same thing as when resolutions are presented at political conventions to determine the state party platform. It makes people feel good to debate, not noticing that the end product contradicts itself and nobody pays attention to it\’s non-binding statements anyway.

End result, it\’s therapeutic and comes with no downside. It\’s a cheap and easy way to appease the base and distract them, at least for a moment, from the fact that the party doesn\’t give a damn what they want. From their move it\’s not a bad idea…in the short term. And in the long term?? Well where else are conservatives gonna go?? Stay home??

oh wait…
