Deep Thoughts With Kevin

July 3rd, 2008 by Kevin

Yeah, so this mono thing is still kicking my ass.  The sore throat is the worst.  Swallowing even water is dreadfully painful.  I’m almost thankful for one of them other symptoms…loss of appetite.  Half a bowl of soup per day and feeling full is almost a blessing, the having lost 10 lbs already is kinda side benefit.  But on top of all that the fatigue is kinda a bummer, although it’s improving….ever so slightly.

So bear with me a little while longer, as supposedly I’m on the downhill side of it now.

bullet In my review of the Heller vs DC decision I remarked

Of course, I’m not a lawyer (to my credit) and I’m not overly experienced at reading legal opinions (to the credit of my social life) but I get the sense that Justice Stevens wasn’t a real good lawyer.

Well as it turns out I might have been more correct than I thought, and perhaps a bit optimistic.  Apparently in his dissenting opinion Stevens made a lot of errors, some of them rather simple.  There different examples of errors can be found here, here and here.

bullet Remember that Boeing lost out to Airbus in the competition to build the next generation of refueling tankers?  Boeing cried foul and whined and bitched alot.  Well according to a investigation by the GAO, they had good reason to.  And looking at the GAO’s findings it does appear as if some shenanigans were afoot.  Although arguably they are no more severe than the shenanigans that were afoot in Boeing’s favor….at least until jailarity ensued.  What hasn’t changed though is that by most performance measures Airbus’s aircraft remains the better aircraft.

bullet Heller vs DC secured the right to self-defense in our own homes with firearms.  But there is a case in the Utah legislature which is likely to have national repercussions as well.   The Utah carry license is an cheap way of accomplishing the goal of having a carry permit in many states who have reciprocity with their own.  Unfortunately that may be coming to an end….renew while you can if you’re dependent on this route.

bullet Amnesty supporting Chris Cannon has lost his primary battle.  Yet more support for the fact that illegal immigration remains a key issue for many.  More the pity then that both of the presidential candidates (yes McCain still does) support amnesty and therefore refuse to talk about it.

bullet Starbucks is closing 600 stores.  The Starbuck store US city block ratio has fallen to 1:1.

bullet Remember that Boeing-led complete utter failure at coming up with a system to secure our borders??? Well despite it being a complete failure, they are moving forward with it anyway.  Today’s incompetence brought to you by the DHS.

bullet Iraq is now passing 15 of their 18 benchmarks.  Last time I check the US was only passing 4 out of 18 ourselves.  So who are we to pass judgement?

bullet We all know that modern France was built upon the back of the liberating US military.  However, I never know this was literally the case.  Typically we’ve only asked for the land to bury our dead….but I don’t think we expected them to build a road over it.

bullet Since I’ve been essentially bed-ridden lately, this list of 70+ tools, tips and hacks to work from bed, is coming in quite handy.

bullet Apparently not finding that pesky AIDs thing challenging enough, Russian scientists have apparently learned how to keep the severed head of a dog alive.

bullet Bush to close Gitmo??  Crazed liberals everywhere panic at the thought of losing the main theme for their street theater.

bullet McCain is apparently “relaunching” his campaign.  Apparently the fact that he’s bundled and completely wasted the past few months is apparently finally sinking in.

bullet So all those economic stimulus checks have gone out.  What were they spent on?? Well not surprisingly many of them were spent on….well, porn.

bullet The world according to Calvin’s Dad.

Kevie – sorry to hear about the mono. I’ve had it and it is a bear!

Regarding the Utah CC permit – Governor Huntsman is the one who wants to do away with it, but according to local Utah bloggers the idea does not have a lot of support in the legislature. Now that I am out here at ground zero, I will keep y’all posted on the developments!

Oh and regarding Chris Cannon….illegal immigration was NOT his downfall in spite of what Michelle says. Cannon had a serious case of DCitis and was totally out of touch with his constituency. I did a post on it last night (shameless plug).
