Deep Thoughts With Kevin

June 4th, 2008 by Kevin

One of the weird parts of political events is if you run a political blog, you\’ll run into people that actually read your stuff and they\’ll comment on what they think about it. Reason I mention that is that happened a few times at the State Convention, and at least two separate people mentioned that they really liked these Deep Thoughts posts.

And here I thought it was just something to take up space for when I can\’t think of anything else to write! Who knew?

\"bullet\" Old & Busted : Metrosexual, New & Sexy : Retrosexual

\"bullet\" Put on your tinfoil hats folks….turns out the discovery of the Titanic wreckage was actually the cover for a covert op.

\"bullet\" The Myth About Oil….

Who profits from the higher oil prices? Washington likes to point the finger at “big oil”, but the dirty little secret is that state and federal governments make out like bandits. According to data from the California Energy Commission, when the price per gallon was $3.89 (April 28, 2008), taxes accounted for $.65 of the price paid at the pump. Crude oil was $2.83 of that. The remaining $.41 went for refining, transportation, marketing and profits. Would Congress dare to look in the mirror?

And there\’s more.

\"bullet\" Bob Dole absolutely unloads on Scott McClellan….now I\’m sure there is a Viagra joke one could make in there, but I\’m not sure I have the stomach for it.

\"bullet\" Oh goodie, as if we needed any more \”good news\”. But apparently McCain\’s likely pick for Secretary of Defense disagrees with the recognition of Israel. And if you\’re a Democrat but not exactly a fan of Obama (who is?) there is a website for you…..explaining why you should vote for McCain….of course, it\’s also choke full of reasons why McCain is a shitty option for Republicans.

\"bullet\" GM offering hummer to deal with low sales. General Motors Chief Executive Rick Wagoner heard to offer \”$10 million, love you long time\”.

\"bullet\" What more complicated? A star chart of the entire galaxy, or a flow chart of all the regulatory rules of the Lieberman-Warner Climate Change Boondoggle Bill. If you said star chart, you obviously haven\’t see the flow chart. Oh and by the way, both McCain and Coleman are voting for this piece of shit.

This bill just passed cloture, you can find updates on it here. Fortunately President Bush has promised to veto it, and the White House isn\’t expecting it to even pass the Senate. It passed cloture 74 – 14, so hopefully they know something we don\’t.

If Republicans are wondering why conservatives are pissed off at them….THIS IS A VERY GOOD REASON WHY.

\"bullet\" Homeland Security Department is now requiring travelers who don\’t need visas to register in advance. I wonder if they\’ll require the same of illegal immigrants that still flood over the borders at will.

\"bullet\" A pill that is likely to increase longevity of life is in the works. That\’s the good news. Bad news is it\’ll probably be 23 years before it\’s on the market in a form you can afford.

\"bullet\" There is finally a reason to label Montana as something besides \”Other\” on a map….it\’s choke full of oil and the state\’s governor can\’t wait to drill. Probably the only part of the country where property values are increasing.

\"bullet\" Captain Irony strikes!!!  A gun control activist is stabbed to death in her apartment….if only she had some tool more powerful than a knife to defend herself.  Perhaps something that allow her to stop her attacker from a distance before he can stab her.  Also it would have to be something that could act as an equalizer by allowing her to counter the superior strength of her attacker.  If only we had such a tool available…..you\’d think with all this technology….oh well…..I\’m sure it\’s all for the better, right??

Hey, would you like the cockeyed optimist thought of the day?
McCain didn’t vote on cloture, probably won’t vote on the bill– too toxic. Coleman has a track record of voting for cloture, so horrible ideas can be debated and “made better” with amendments (like putting mascara on the pig, along with lipstick), but then voting against if he gets enough pressure. I suspect Republicans, if they’re smart (on which there is the occasional doubt), want to get as many Democrats as possible on record as favoring a massive new bureaucracy, killing thousands of jobs, crippling the US economy and raising energy prices, before killing this pig for the session. That’s all I really want, is to forestall government action until it becomes obvious that global warming is nothing but hot air.

  2. Kevin Says:

Problem is the threshold for cloture is much higher than for actually passing the bill.

So if you know the bill is horseshit and you want to kill it, THAT is the time to do it.

Especially when no amendment short of “delete the entire thing” is going to make the bill even close to decent.

  3. J. Ewing Says:

Yes, Republicans alone can stop cloture and stall out the bill, but it takes all Republicans AND a sensible Democrat or two to prevent passage. I didn’t say it was likely, with those odds, just possible.

And if the Republicans really are setting up a “gotcha,” then it is much better to have debate go forward and “kill” the bill for final passage than to filibuster it.

  4. Kevin Says:

Yeah see, I’d really rather not play political games of “gotcha” with my future.

Some (most!) things are more important than politics….such as being able to afford a decent standard of living and/or having a job.

  5. J. Ewing Says:

Only game in town, though. If it helps, I just heard Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Rush today, saying essentially that– that they’re getting the Democrats on record in a drawn-out debate before they kill it. I hope they’re right. Bush has promised to veto, too.

  6. J. Ewing Says:

Just to get it on the record, the Senate today defeated cloture by a vote of 48-36. They couldn’t even get a majority when they needed 60 votes! The good news is that Democrats are getting both smarter and dumber. Almost all of the 24 votes needed for cloture were withheld by Democrats, apparently aware of how far they had overstepped and how well the GOP was playing rope-a-dope. The 36 still on board with this nonsense are obviously too stupid to remember that, when the Kyoto treaty– essentially the same bill– came before the Senate, it was defeated 99-0.
