Obamessiah\’s End

March 18th, 2008 by Kevin

After months of relating the inevitability of Obama, now the conventional wisdom of many pundits is that Obama is finished. His fatal flaw being his close personal friend/mentor/paster/etc of 20 years. The man that married him to his wife, blessed his house, preached to his family and was a personal friend. Also turns out he is an racist hate-monger whom has less than favorable views of the United States. Polls indicate the American public isn\’t taking too kindly to the less-than-godly Pastor Jeremiah Wright and national opinion polls shows Obama trending downward likely as a result of this little episode.

In response, some pundits are declaring this the end of Obama and that this is a fatal flaw he won\’t recover from.

Sorry, I don\’t buy it. As they say, this dog just won\’t hunt.

Right now this issue is making waves because, well bloggers are talking about it and the media is. As a rule bloggers are good at finding previously overlooked angles to a story or general stories themselves that go against the media bias. But they aren\’t terribly effective at keeping a story at the front of the public consciousness…eventually it just devolves into noise. And the media itself has ADD. Hell they\’ve even gotten bored with Iraq by now and Obama has been their messiah for awhile now. As a result this story has a very limited lifespan in both the media and the blogs.

It needs someone to carry the torch and keep bringing this up…..normally the two obvious candidates would be the other candidates themselves.

Clinton? Yeah right! Clinton is going to continuously harp on a black preacher being racist and America-hating?? Hillary already has race problems. Most of the black community already hates her because they think she might bring down their golden boy. Her campaign has suffered from all sorts of bone-headed comments regarding race already. This is not an issue that she can push, not without torpedoing her own chances and permanently fracturing the entire Democratic Party. UPDATE: Yeah, sure enough….she has announced she\’s not touching this issue.

McCain?? The man that takes more pleasure in criticizing Republicans than Democrats??? McCain has so far proved unwilling, if not unable, to toss more than the token jab at the Democrats. Plus from a strategic point of view I\’m sure his aides are telling him to keep mum. They see a potential fracturing of the \”black vote\” from the Democratic Party and they want to be in a position to benefit….criticizing a popular black pastor is not a good way to do that.

Sorry punditry. This is a worthwhile story with big implications and it should mean a lot, but this is a message without a messenger. It\’ll be at the forefront of the public mind for another week then I predict a quiet death. There is just nobody to move forward with it. Problem is that the next primary is several weeks away. This is an issue that Obama will take his hits on, his halo will be slightly off kilter and then he\’ll move on.
