Forcing A Vote On The SAVE Act

March 13th, 2008 by Kevin

Since it was introduced the SAVE Act (HR 4088) has languished in committee and excuses have been made by both sides. Now finally each member may be forced to make their obstruction public. Rep. Thelma Drake (R-Va.) has filed a Discharge Petition that would basically force the bill out of committee and onto the House floor for a vote. It needs a majority of the House (218) to sign onto it in order for it to succeed.

On the first day 139 representatives signed it, including Minnesota’s only two Republican representatives (and yes the omission is intentional). As of the time of writing there are now163 signatures…only 55 more are required. If your representative isn’t either Kline or Bachmann you should get on the phone and let your representative know you want them to sign. Many of the representatives that have signed so far have done so because of massive response by voters, so the pressure is definitely working.

To see an updated list of signatures, feel free to check out the list here. Analysis of the SAVE Act can be found here. Anyone that isn’t signing this probably shouldn’t be taken seriously when they claim they take immigration seriously in the next election.
