Reactions To The Fox NH Debate

January 7th, 2008 by Kevin

Heh, how about we have another debate?? Sounds great.

And I didn’t mention it yesterday but I kinda liked the format of that one, candidates were able to challenge each other a little more. This debate looks like it’s just more of the same old boring debates we’ve had.

Oh and let me start off by saying that every time a candidate uses the name “Reagan” I want to hurl a beer through my television, and you all know how much I hate to waste good beer. Reagan is dead, get over it. NONE of you are Reagan, you’re not even close. Moreover, Reagan was perfect for his time and place, that time and place is not now and here.

Holy crap….could they seat these guys around a smaller table??? Seriously, doesn’t Fox have a table bigger than a stool??

Oh, and where did the crazy guy go??? Oh that’s right, he got left out of this debate. So we’re gonna have a debate of the old boring format and we don’t even get to listen to them all ridicule Ron Paul’s crazy ramblings?? Shit…I don’t have enough beer for this.

A few thoughts…

  • As these debates get more heated, there is an increasingly obvious development. Nobody is attacking Thompson. This is either due to nobody regarding him as a serious threat, or else none of them have figured out a way to attack him without revealing themselves as not a conservative. I hope it’s the latter, rather than the former.
  • When people do address him, it’s usually to cling onto his ideas and take them for a ride. One could say this is good because he is driving the debate, but at the end of the day, are the others just talking for the sake of talking, or are they really being convinced?
  • Huckabee, Romney and McCain seem to be just having their own private little threesome here. Not surprising, McCain has to attack both. Romney and Huckabee are both trying to fend each other off. I think Romney is winning here.
  • Again, it appears that anything positive these guys can agree on originated from Thompson….can we just nominate him and dispense with these other ego-driven hypocrites now? Although he seems a little out of it tonite.
  • It’s clear these guys are acting upon lessons learned in yesterday’s debate. Everyone seems very low key.
  • I’m starting to feel like I’m watching a bunch of kids fight for positions on student council.
  • All the “Why I should be President” answers sucked.

Focus group….

  • Heh, there are crazy people outside the windows in the back
  • According to them Romney was the clear winner, Thompson was the clear loser, and Romney won over alot of people tonite
  • Unimpressed with Huckabee, including “I’m not voting for a pastor, I’m voting for a President”. Bad news for Huck
  • Nobody had anything bad to say about anything Thompson had to say, but rather has manner of saying it.

This debate basically sucked and was boring. Not sure I agree with the focus group, but for what it’s worth I wouldn’t say Romney lost this debate. I like Thompson’s answers and personally I like his manner of delivery, but it’s becoming pretty clear that his manner of delivery apparently doesn’t work in the east coast mentality, which the GOP can pretty much punt on anyway.

Honestly I’d have to give Romney the win here, with Thompson a close second. Third is tricky. Huckabee was sleazy, Giuliani was non-existant, and McCain toned it down alot so really didn’t stand out. I’d give the very tentative third to McCain.

Oh and this was Ron Paul’s best debate performance so far.

After watching the debate tonight (Sunday Jan 9th), I think Romney did us all a favor by forcing the other candidates to talk about the real issues in relation to their records. He seems to be balanced in having the right values when it comes to caring for others and his family, but tough when it comes to fighting for the welfare of this country and standing up for true Reagan “conservative” principles. Also, the guy has energy! Don’t we want someone like him to stand up to the terrorist? keep the economy going? fix Social Security? Set up health care system?, make us energy independent, etc.? Let’s tap into this energy - the other guys looked like they were ready to fall asleep compared to Romney. He has the best chance of winning next Nov - Go Romney!!

Wow. You really expect ANY President to do all of that? If so, we should elect Huckabee; at least he TALKS to somebody that could accomplish it. :-)

Seriously, to answer your rhetorical questions:
No, I don’t elect a President to “keep the economy going.” I can do for myself if the government will stay out of the way.
No, I don’t want a President “fixing” Social Security. I want it “fixed” by getting rid of that government Ponzi scheme, especially since, if it is done like the last several times, it will soon collapse, taking us all with it.
No, I don’t want government “setting up” a health care system. The best thing the government could do for our health care system is to get the h— out of it altogether. Prices would drop 50% or more and quality would improve.
I especially don’t want government meddling in the free market for energy. When free market prices go up, people find alternatives and we all benefit. When government drives prices up artificially, the government squanders the money and nobody benefits.

If any of these things are what Romney is promising, then I have to agree with you… Go, Romney, and don’t let the doorknob….
