Principles Matter, Not Issues

Chuck Norris attempts to slam Fred Thompson for,

failing to support federal constitutional amendments that would ban abortion and gay marriage

Yeah Chuck, it’s called federalism, it’s a basic conservative principle, and the basis of our form of government (but you knew that right?). You are arguing issues. Issues come and issues go, even ones as important as abortion and marriage. And issue positions only apply to that particular issue.

Principles last forever and they apply across many issues and can define one’s whole outlook on life, the world and issues. That’s why they are so important. That’s why people are willing to die over them in some cases.

I have infinite more trust in someone that applies conservative principles to issues they face. From that I can reasonably conclude how that person will approach virtually any issue that faces them. This is vitally important, because I have no idea what issues we’ll face in 2011.

For all I know, the big issue then will be a national smoking ban. Because of his solid belief in federalism I know that Fred Thompson will oppose it. I have no idea what Huckabee will do. I have no idea what any of the other candidates will do. Sure I can guess, based upon the type of stances they’ve taken on issues in the past. But there is no overriding principle behind their stance on issues, other than to laughably claim they are a “Reagan Conservative”.

By attempting to slam Fred Thompson for adhering to what is a defining conservative characteristic, you reveal Huckabee as significantly less. The old adage, “It is better to be thought a fool, than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt” applies very well in this case.

P.S. Didn’t the Huckabee campaign learn the first time around that it is a BAD idea to take on Rush Limbaugh when striving for the Republican endorsement??

Even radio host Rush Limbaugh heckled Huckabee with a similar liberal lashing, accusing him of not being a conservative in the line of Ronald Reagan – an unfortunate “Rush to judgment.”

The only truth in their words is that they could not be further from the truth.

Do you really think it wise to poke the bear again???

Let me cite the First Rule Of Holes

When you find yourself in one, stop digging.
