Confirmed : Vista Sucks

December 5th, 2007 by Kevin

Allow me a few paragraphs to whine for a moment. If it helps, you can laugh at my misery….or share in my pain. Whatever tickles your fancy.

So Vista arrived on my machine. I’m disgruntled but fine I’ll deal with it. Until I learn I simply can not get the day thing to read a mapped network drive. I can map it. It can see the files in the directory. But it can’t open ANY thing. Frustrating? Yeah. Especially when all three of the other PCs on my home network can access it just fine…..running Windows 2K, XP and 98 (don’t ask). Proof that Vista sucks worse than all previous Windows products….which in itself is like a Hall of Fame of Suck.

Fine whatever, I’m sure it’s a problem with a setting. Glance around the web reveals little more than other people complaining about the same thing. Fine. This has to be an easy question for support right?? I mean this is a VERY basic function for a modern OS.

Look at the support page. Ohhhh, look, their support center is open for another hour, I can still call them. Answering machine says they are closed. Um, no you’re not a-holes.

Ok look I can email a tech?!? Great, I’ll email, go to bed and in the morning technological greatness will be in my inbox. Yeah! Click on the option to send an email to technical support. I have to enter my Product ID to verify I’m within the 90-day free support period?? Sure, no problem….I just took this thing out of the box today afterall. Punch it in and get an error message, indicating it’s an invalid ID number….and no way to contest that yes it is valid you dumbasses.

Wow….so now I have an expensive machine with a crappy OS that isn’t supported. And while I see that I can get XP via my employer for $65, do I really want to give MORE money to the same company that has already screwed me over?

And Microsoft wonders why it has a poor reputation.

“Moral” of this story : Vista sucks. Microsoft sucks. I wonder if there are any good games on Linux?

UPDATE : After letting three different support persons take a crack at this issue the end result is that they confirmed the topic of this post. Best advice offered? “Wait and see if Service Pack 1 fixes this issue”. Sorry, no will do. Time to reformat the drive and install a different OS. And then make a pledge to never try another Microsoft operating system until after SP8.

This sounds like bitter whining after an upset Kevin got home from a disappointing Wild game last night

  2. J. Ewing Says:

Kevin, have you looked at the properties of the mapped drive? Have you registered your copy of Vista so that you are entitled to free support? Have you consulted the Microsoft support groups online (chat groups)? I’ve found them very helpful. Are you working from an “administrative account” on the PC? That’s caught me more than once in XP. Are you running the version of Vista (Vista Pro or whatever) that permits what you’re trying to do?

  3. Kevin Says:

    Yes to all.

  4. J. Ewing Says:

    Then Vista sucks.

  5. DJ Says:

Why do you have a Win98 box?

  6. R-Five Says:

My employer sold off some old Pentium 4 machines so I bought 3 and cannibalized into a machine to try out Linux, which is what I’m using to post this comment.

It’s a little rough around the edges, but it works. But here, too, adding and mapping drives is “stone knives and bear skins” administration.

Maybe such tasks are cultural universals, destined to be mysterious on all platforms.

FYI, the Mepis 7 distribution has 8 games. The Tetris game, is decent, and there is Sudoku, too.

  7. Kevin Says:

DJ : Actually I have that because of you dorks. Only TW server I know of runs off of Win98.

R5: Yeah, well Sodoku and Tetris come with most OS systems. I was more thinking games like Civilization IV or Starcraft II or Warcraft III or whatever. Those type of games.

  8. DJ Says:

TW? Then it’s totally worth it!!

  9. Kevin Says:

Well I have a TW server able to be run, we just need the necessary players.

  10. Vista is garbage Says:

Okay, when you spend good money to buy an OS like Vista, you expect it to work and work well. I do not upgrade because I like dishing out extra money, I do so because the OS is supposed to bring benefits to my computing experience. Not daily crashes.

Seriously. My vista-driven computer gives me the blue screen at least once a day. I am appalled.

This OS is absolute junk. Not even a beta release candidate. Period.
