NRLC To Endorse Thompson - Why The Surprise?

Ok so it sounds like the National Right To Life Committee (NRLC) is going to endorse Fred Thompson. It’s a good pickup for him, as several of his opponents have recently picked up endorsements. Rudy just got Pat Robertson, McCain just got Senator Switchback Brownback. Ron Paul got White Supremicists, 9/11 Truthers, and Marvin the Martian. Romney got….um, a midget hooker in Detroit?? I dunno.
Some have expressed surprise and mild puzzlement at the upcoming endorsement. Mostly because Fred Thompson opposes a so-called “Human Life Amendment”, which would basically eliminate abortion nationwide.
I’m not sure why this should be a surprise to anyway. Such an amendment can be easily opposed for the same reason why Roe vs Wade was a horrible decision. And regardless of you stance on abortion, you have to admit that Roe vs Wade was just that….a horrible decision. For the simple reason that it destroyed the concept of federalism by taking the decision away from the states, in direct contradiction of Amendment Ten of the Bill of Rights.
Just as one might oppose Roe vs Wade, regardless of their stance on abortion, one can easily oppose a Human Life Amendment, as it takes the choice away from the states. And that’s part of the appeal of federalism, if you live in a state that has legalized something you find appalling, such as abortion, death penalty, drugs, Rosie, gay marriage, liberalism, etc, you simply have the option of moving to a state that better reflects your viewpoint. All of these are topics not specifically delegated to the federal government, and therefore are the responsibility of either the states, or the people themselves.
Now granted a Human Life Amendment is on much more solid constitutional ground, than Roe vs Wade. After all, an amendment is changing the constitution according to the legal process. Roe vs Wade was simply “discovering” a “right” that didn’t exist.
So I see Thompson’s position, not really as a statement for abortion, after all, he’s scored 100% with the NRLC when he was in the Senate. Rather I see this as a resounding embrace of the concept of federalism, and I applaud him for it.
NOTE : I understand the viewpoint of people that want a pro-life amendment, honestly I do. I just don’t agree. I base that opinion less on religious grounds and more on just my belief of how our government is supposed to work. Now ideally, every state could/would decide that they don’t want abortion available in their state, but ultimately I believe that’s up to the state. Just as I believe issues like gay marriage, death penalty, drugs and Tom Cruise belong to the states.
