It’s Not Over Yet. And DAMMIT STOP PRETENDING IT IS

February 12th, 2007 by Kevin

Recently, while with a group of conservatives I was asked “the question”. The one we all have been asking each other.

Who is your favorite?

Well that’s easy, so far it’s Duncan Hunter. The immediate response to that was,

Ok, who is your favorite of the people that might actually get it?

What?? Might actually get it?? It’s not over yet folks. These three are not our only choices. Do I have to remind you that at this stage of the game in 2003, Democrats considered Howard Dean a shoe-in for the nomination, and Kerry was barely a blip on the radar.

It’s especially alarming when you look at what conservatives have been doing for the past several years. We’ve sat and bitched about RINOS. We’ve harped over “The Gang of 14″. We’ve complained about Republicans who don’t have a spine. We’re lamented that there weren’t any real conservatives left anymore.

And now you all want to roll over and limit yourself to three bozos who….well, let’s be frank, ARE NOT CONSERVATIVE??? Are you all nuts?? We’re not even to the primaries people. And the primaries are where you get to bitch about having your perfect candidate. It’s the general election where you choke down what you have to and vote for the best of many evils.

So why are conservatives content with imperfect solutions?? Why not accept the fact that you have lots of options and that the field is still wide open. Allow yourself to be picky and demand the perfect candidate.

I see and hear conservatives talking up any of the front three and it amazes me. When I point out the alarmingly numerous shortcomings of any one of them, the response is usually something along the lines of

Yeah….that kinda sucks, but at least he’s good in this other category

Why are you already settling for second best?? Wouldn’t you at least like to stand up for your ideals before you tuck tail and roll over? All you conservatives out there, where is YOUR spine?? The game isn’t even on the line yet and you’re thinking about how to explain your loss.

Because really, if you select a Republican who isn’t a conservative, and he wins, is it really a win??? By that rationale, Kerry could announce he’s switched parties and if we voted him in would it be a win?? No, granted that’s an extreme example, but same principle. Yes, the GOP tent is big, but is it really necessary to pick the guy peaking in from the outside as your ringleader??

Take my suggestions folks, it’s still early in the game. Keep ahold of your ideals and look for the candidate that best matches those. You can start comprimising later, for now pick the guy you WANT to vote for, not the one you have to.

You are absolutely right. Conservatives constantly complain about RINOs and then when they have the perfect conservative candidate shows up, like Duncan Hunter, their support switches to the RINOs. No courage.

[...] Overall, the poll says alot. First of all, none of the candidates scored over 20%. Secondly, Condi (who isn’t running) got 5%, Newt (who hasn’t announced) got 19% and Other got 10%, which is really surprising because I don’t see any candidate who isn’t already included. What this says to me is alot of people are keeping an open mind and haven’t definitely decided. So in other words, the nomination is not yet decided folks!! [...]
