Obama\’s First Hurdle

January 5th, 2007 by Kevin

Well, it turns out that Barack Obama isn't the golden poster boy we all thought he has.  Rumors of drug use seem to be confirmed by the young rookie Senator

Long before the national media spotlight began to shine on every twist and turn of his life's journey, Barack Obama had this to say about himself: "Junkie. Pothead. That's where I'd been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man. . . . I got high [to] push questions of who I was out of my mind."

The Democratic senator from Illinois and likely presidential candidate offered the confession in a memoir written 11 years ago, not long after he graduated from law school and well before he contemplated life on the national stage. At the time, 20,000 copies were printed and the book seemed destined for the remainders stacks.

Now many have begun theorizing that this is that start of the downward spiral for the young senator.  Even Hillary seems to think he's not quite the threat she originally thought he was.  The common belief seems to be that the the Senator has peaked and will now start downward as his political inexperience shows.

It shouldn't be surprising that I think they are all wrong.  Sure he's not very politically experienced, but you don't get considered for your party's Presidential nomination during your first term by being dumb.  I would say this is more likely a very politically adept move.

Get your flaws out now before the race properly starts.  Let it become old news now, so that when the race really starts (and people actually care), it's no longer an issue.  Once the primaries start heating up, calling him a pothead or a druggie no longer has quite the same sting.  Certainly by the actual Presidential race, it will be almost a non-issue.

No, I think many people are underestimating Obama..at their own risk I might add.  He may be new, but he's not stupid.  Those who assume he doesn't know what he's doing, set themselves up for a political checkmate on a race that really matter.
