Alito Hearings = Meaningless

January 12th, 2006 by Kevin

Obviously the big news lately is the Alito hearings. And virtually every way you turn you hear people either disputing the issues being brought up in the hearings, or trying to support them. Here\’s a tip….it\’s pointless. Because these hearings are pointless. It\’s standard boilerplate, and as predictable as a Hollywood movie.

That\’s because probably 98 of the senators have already made up their mind, even if they claim they haven\’t. The remaining five won\’t decide according to the issues but based upon whatever is politically beneficial to them.

But he still has to answer questions right, they could trick him right?? Yeah, hypothetically they could. But get this…the guy isn\’t stupid. If he were, he wouldn\’t have gotten this far. And any question he thinks he might get tricked on, he just refuses to answer or dances around. No worries.

So you can sit and fester over the accusations being thrown around, but it\’s just that. It\’s a soapbox, that just happens to have a judge sitting on it. Nothing more. It\’s just another campaign stop for 2006/2008. The senators know nothing of substance is gonna happen, so they may as well use it to throw mud at each other and gear up for their next re-election.

And if you take a look at what\’s happened so far can you honestly say that anything besides that has happened?

So sit down, put your feet up, try the dip, and relax. He\’ll be confirmed soon and we can go back to blaming/defending Bush.

What can we do to make this meaningful?
I have been listening to as much of the hearing as possible at work and yes it does seem meaningless but that is because both sides are using this hearing to push their own agendas and not to discover if Alito is qualified for the position he is being appointed for.

Although I an am not a Nascar fan, didn’t that little spat between Spector and Kennedy look like a crash on the track? At least something unexpected came up for a little while.

Meaningful?? This is politics, whatever made you think it could be meaningful?

Tell you what, when politicians care more about doing what’s right than getting re-elected I think this process will take care of itself.

Sure there is the occasional humorous moment. Spector vs Kennedy was fun. But once again it was just politics. A powerplay by Kennedy went wrong.

“98 of the senators have already made up their mind… The remaining five…”

    Don’t stop him. He’s on a roll.

  4. Tony B Says:

I liked how Schumer had his response to Alito’s answers written out in front of him for him to read today. Not even pretending that it mattered what Alito had said.

Dang it Doug, I originally wrote 95 and then decided it probably wouldn’t even be that many.

    So picky.
